18, 19, 20, 21, 22

18, 19, 20, 21, 22

When you woke up this morning and looked into the mirror, what did you see? Were you contented with what you saw? Or did what you see give u a shock? I saw a young boy with uncombed hair, an unshaved face, sleepy eyes, and he greeted me with a big yawn. What did you see?

Have you ever wished you looked better? Have you wished you looked more handsome or prettier? Have you wished you looked younger or more matured? I did.

It all started years ago, the weather was magnificent, the sky was clear, the birds were chirping, the flowers were blooming,  I was driving home. I followed all the rules on the road, from obeying the speed limit to stopping at the red lights, to signaling at every turn, and even wearing my seat belt. But somehow I was asked to stop by a policeman.

I wind down my window. “Hi sir, is there anything did wrong?”

Policeman: “mm, you of age to drive ke?, have license ke? Driving license, IC.”

“Do I look that young? I was 22 that year, I had 18,19,20,21,22 that’s 5 whole years ahead of that age, it’s as though I did not grow for half a decade. [stab] I wish I looked more mature.

I reluctantly took out my IC and driving license for him, and finally he let me go.

To make things worse my girlfriend dumped me on the same day.

She chose him over me because he was strong, matured looking and he had a better car.

Her last words to me were “Pack your stuff, your leaving, don’t forget anything, I hate people thinking I’m dating my younger brother and by the way, I hate your car.”

I was 22 she was 21, but I looked 15 to her friends… [stab] I wish I looked more mature.

I packed my stuff and boarded the next plane home. As the plane began to cruse, I signaled for the air hostess. Moments later, I was greeted by a charming young air stewardess. “How may I help u sir”  “I would like some red wine please” She started to check me out. She gave me glances from head to toe and told me very professionally “I’m sorry sir, I would have to request for your ID, as alcoholic drink on flight are only for 18 and older, however we have juice you can enjoy.” [stab] I could not believe this, I was 22… I had 18,19,20,21,22 five whole years, that’s a half century gap from that age and I don’t look 18???? It’s as if I did not grow the last quarter of my life.

I looked at her and told her “Actually, I am 22 now and 23 in a few months”. She stared back and started giggling, and started whispering to her colleague. “How old do you think he is” “At most he looks 16 but 18…” The worse part was I over heard the entire conversation [stab] She then came back and said “I’m sorry sir but I would need some identification” So I reluctantly pull out and showed her my passport.

Maybe my picture looked very pitiful. She covered her mouth as her colleague peeped over “Oh, my.. Lee Han-Sen… oh my…” “ Malaysia right…, here’s your drink sir” This only  confirmed one thing. I looked like a kid [ stab] I wished I looked more mature.

As I arrived at the airport, I took taxi back to a mall nearby my house to meet up with some old friends and catch a movie. During the journey back, I had some chats with the taxi driver. We touched on various topics and as we reached my destination, he told me “your thinking is very matured for your age boy, some men 20,30 still think like 10 year olds.” Was that a compliment or was that an insult. The meter showed RM60 but he said “50 enough boy, student price.”

That ain’t so bad. He charged me less because he thought I was a student.

Hmm why not?  So I watched the movies at student price, went for bowling at student rates and even a hair cuts at student rates. That’s not so bad. As for girls, if I can’t get the older 1s there’s always be the younger.

When one door of opportunity closes another door opens. We are often too focused and brought down by the 1st door that we fail to see the second door opening for us. When you fail, do not be too depressed over your failure, or short comings, instead watch out for the next door opening for you.

When you wake up tomorrow and look into the mirror, be sure to have that happy, contented reflection stare straight back at you!
